On August 2nd, people worldwide, including in Békés, commemorated the victims of the Roma Holocaust and the tragedy that befell the Roma community during World War II. At the center of the Hungarian Gypsy Missions International in Békés, the memory of the victims was honored in a dignified manner this year as well.
Since 1972, August 2nd has been observed as a day of remembrance for the victims of the Roma Holocaust, following a resolution by the World Romani Congress in Paris. This year, the tragedy was commemorated by Albert Durkó, President; Attila Rákóczi, the Director-General of the Békés County Government Office; and Tibor Kálmán, the mayor of Békés. Historians Csaba Katona and Attila Rácz contributed to a deeper understanding of the era with their lectures.
“The Roma were deported, gassed, and cruelly annihilated solely because of their ethnicity, treated like animals. Human, learn! But humanity does not learn. In addition to remembrance, it is important to recognize the Roma community’s resistance and perseverance. I believe in divine compensation, and I believe that God is preparing something wonderful for the Roma people,” said Albert Durkó in his speech.
Director-General Attila Rákóczi emphasized that the Roma community of Békés County is a shining example of life triumphing over death and light prevailing over darkness. He also noted that remembrance has conquered the shadow of forgetfulness.
Mayor Tibor Kálmán highlighted that both the local government and the HGMI play a crucial role in helping the local Roma community preserve its identity. “This day, along with remembrance, also helps us to work even more effectively in the future for the Roma people,” stated Tibor Kálmán.
The organizers invited historians Csaba Katona and Attila Rácz to provide comprehensive knowledge about the Roma Holocaust and the life of the Roma community in the capital during a lecture. These topics will also be discussed in the mission’s podcast channel, Reménycast, available for those interested.
The worship team from Hajdúhadház provided a fitting framework for the event, leaving a lasting impression on those present. As a closing act, following tradition, the participants laid wreaths and lit candles in memory of the victims at the World War II memorial in Békés. At this location, István Aba-Horváth, a board member of CIKÖSZ (Alliance of Roma Communities), and Mayor Tibor Kálmán delivered ceremonial speeches. The commemoration, which drew participants from various parts of the country, was organized jointly by the Municipality of Békés City, the Hungarian Gypsy Missions International, and the Roma Methodology and Research Center.
