Church Building Project
Church Building Project
It all began with a vision. ‘I saw myself turning into this street. It was night, and the light of a streetlamp illuminated this spot. »Here, a church will be built.« I heard a voice.’
Construction works are going on in Mezőberény. László Surman, Mission Director, received a prophecy from the Lord years ago. This prophecy he got has started to blossom: in one of the most marginalised and poorest areas of Mezőberény (Hungary), locally known as Delhi, we are in the middle of the construction of a church that would offer hundreds of Roma families the opportunity for repentance and turning to Jesus. Work had begun, but due to inflation and other economic conditions, the money ran out and the church was left on the brakes and the work stopped. We believe that God will not abandon the work that He has started. We are looking for individuals, organizations and churches who have a heart for a mission like ours, and who could support the full completion of the church.
“What you see now, I will build up!”
My name is László Surman, I am a pastor of Hungarian Gypsy Missions International.
I have been ministering in Hungary in a small town called Mezőberény for many years now. The population of the town is 11,241 people, and 11-12% of those are of Roma nationality. As for the town’s structure, they live at the periphery in four segregations. The largest is called “Delhi” by the Roma where about 700 Roma people live.
Their life standards and living conditions reflect a typical deep poverty situation, which can be changed only by faith in Jesus Christ. The presence of alcohol, smoking, different drugs, crime, theft, and violence influence all families there. Both the physical and spiritual state of the people cries out for healing.
While ministering in “Delhi” I have realized that caring for people can be performed only if we are continuously present among them, and help their life situations with a holistic approach. Therefore, I planned to buy a building and continue the soul-saving ministry there.
But a few years ago (in November 2018) I received a vision–I believe it came from the Holy Spirit. I saw myself driving toward the segregated area. While I was praying I turned around a corner to a long straight street, and at the end of the street, I saw the facade of a temple. As I was looking at the temple I heard the Holy Spirit saying: “What you see now, I will build up!”
As soon as the vision finished, I started to divert my thoughts and find excuses such as “This wasn’t from the Lord” and “I don’t have to care for this vision.” Yet, another thought was getting stronger in my mind, which the Holy Spirit was saying: “I will rebuild everything, everything!”
After the Lord confirmed His will for me through many testimonies, with the prayer support of the local church my wife and I bought the land for construction and started to collect donations. It was a fantastic experience to see the different work machines and workers appear at the construction site at the beginning of 2022 and the construction of the temple could start. As we can globally see, unfortunately, the prices of construction materials went sky high, and the rising salary demand of professionals created an almost impossible financial situation for us. We are currently at 50% completion with construction. We need more donations to complete the construction.
The construction of the temple will create a community space for the 700 people who live there, where their lives could be changed completely. It might become a good practice for the whole country of how God is able to reshape a whole settlement, society, and nations.
This community space would provide opportunities for children’s ministry, shaping the youth’s vision of the future, training, health state checking, and especially for faith-related activities, where people could get from death to life by getting to know Jesus.
By the grace of our Lord there already are some newborn brethren who live in that community. It is wonderful to see how God transforms their hearts, lives, and thinking, as they work for the Roma community to become part of God’s Kingdom.
