Roma community

Hungarian Gypsy Missions International remains steadfast in its mission to share Christ’s redeeming love and to strengthen Roma communities. Throughout 2024, the Faith and Mission Directorate carried out its work with unwavering dedication, achieving remarkable results across various fields.

Key Events of HGMI

One of the year’s most significant events was the 9th Protestant Roma Mission Conference in Budapest, where hundreds of participants gathered to discuss themes of power and authority. Another major milestone was the 2nd Carpathian Basin Roma Mission Conference, aimed at fostering unity and solidarity among Hungarian-speaking Roma communities.

In addition to these conferences, various training programs—such as PI Training, the Community-Transformational Missionary Worker Course, and the Methodology of Community Building and Multiplication Training—enhanced the effectiveness of church work.

International relations also deepened, with HGMI conducting joint programs with Finnish and American partners, further strengthening global mission efforts.

Ministry Among Youth and Children

Children’s camps in Mezőberény and Békés provided young participants with the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ and His saving love through biblical teachings. These camps also celebrated the richness of Roma culture, allowing children to connect with their heritage in meaningful ways.

The “Reményhír Cup” event series, held in multiple locations across the country, attracted a large number of young participants, fostering both faith and community engagement.

Additionally, the faith and ethics education program successfully launched during the 2023/24 school year, allowing 98 children across nine public schools to explore biblical truths and embed them in their hearts and minds. As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us:
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Charitable Assistance and Donations

A new operational model at the Pepita Donation Center enabled disadvantaged individuals to purchase essential items at significantly reduced prices. Meanwhile, the CharityPoint initiative provided families with support through laundry services, food assistance, and other aid programs.

Throughout 2024, HGMI staff regularly organized food, clothing, and donation drives, with a special focus on families affected by the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict, assisting nearly 1,000 people.

In preparation for Christmas, a total of 1,820 care packages were distributed to families in need.

Results and Future Vision

Over the past year, around 200 baptisms took place within HGMI congregations, reflecting the ongoing spiritual growth of the community. Staff also played a crucial role in establishing eleven new civil organizations while continuing to support and maintain existing ones.

“Together, we are building God’s kingdom, and we believe that faith, love, and the power of community can make the world a better place.” – summarized the staff of the Faith and Mission Directorate.
